AVOCA — The AHSTW Lady Vikes defeated the Audubon Wheelers 3-1 (25-14, 25-8, 23-25, 25-20) in Western Iowa Conference action.
The Wheelers managed just 22 total points in the first two sets as the Lady Vikes dominated the tempo and attack early on.
After scoring just eight points in a lopsided second set, Audubon fought back and made the hosting Lady Vikes turn up the heat to put away the Wheelers in their final home game.
“We played really well in those first two sets,” AHSTW coach Kelsey Muxfeldt said after seeing her team improve to 17-11, 5-5 WIC. “We were working together and doing the little things right, we stopped doing some of those things in the third set, and credit Audubon, they are a scrappy team, they came back in the fourth set, we had a big lead and they fought back. But, it was good to see us finish strong.”
The Wheelers with this loss have dropped eight straight conference games. Though the first two set mostly went rough for the visiting Wheelers (5-17, 1-8 WIC), Audubon coach Liz Stein was proud of the fight the Wheelers gave in the final two sets.
“We did have strong points in the first two sets,” Stein said. “We were point for point until we hit that same old rut we have been hitting, same thing happened in set two. In set three and four, we decided to fight back.”
Audubon will play Logan-Magnolia at home on Thursday for their next game. AHSTW will now sit tight as they wait for the Western Iowa Conference tournament to start next week.
