OAKLAND — Exira-EHK (13-14) used a big third and four inning to propel themselves to an upset win over Riverside (18-10) 7-3 in Wednesday’s Iowa Class 1A regional quarterfinal contest.

After scoring in the opening inning the Spartans tacked up four runs in the third and a pair more in the fourth to jump to a 7-0 lead. The Bulldogs showed some life at the end as Meghan reed got the hosts on the board in the fifth. The Lady Dawgs made some noise in their last gasp, as they put up two in the seventh.

Freshman pitcher Macy Emgarten however struck out two batters in the seventh one of which was for the final out to send Riverside home.

“This is a big, big victory,” Spartan coach Ashton Koehlmoos said. “I told the girls before the game that if we come tonight and play our game the way we have been playing, the score will take care of itself. That’s exactly what happened.”

With Emgarten’s 12 strikeouts, the freshman achieved strikeout number 300 of her young high school career. Reaching the milestone on this stage made it that much more meaningful.

“It was really exciting,” Emgarten said. “Especially to reach this during regionals is awesome. Hopefully, on Friday I can get some more.”

Exira-EHK will travel to class 1A’s fourth ranked Newell-Fonda on Friday for round three at 7 p.m.
