CASS COUNTY – The Cass County Board of Supervisors is expected to discuss the cell phone allowance policy and possibly amenda the 2021 Holiday Schedule during its meeting on Tuesday, according to the agenda.

Last month, the board tabled setting a cell phone use allowance and who is eligible to receive it following a lengthy discussion.

The current allowance is $40 per month, and the discussion centered around whether that amount was too high, especially when, officials say, the average person spends about $50 per month for their cell phone bill.

“I don’t have a problem with the allowance,” Board Member Mark O’Brien said, “I have a problem with the amount of the allowance. I think $40 is more than generous.”

O’Brien said some secondary roads employees had told him that their radios don’t always transmit well, and they are more likely to get called on their personal cell phones for work related topics, however, they aren’t getting an allowance for that.

Board Chairman Steve Baier said the $40 amount could have been chosen as an incentive for employees to get the allowance, instead of having the county have to purchase cell phones for employees to use. He added it was likely that when that figure was considered not as many employees were using or had cell phones.

Earlier this month, the board approved the holiday schedule for the courthouse for 2021, making a slight change due to some holidays falling on weekends this year, and giving two personal days to use in place of holidays not included.

Holidays for the courthouse this year will include Memorial Day, Fourth of July (July 5 for the courthouse as July 4 falls on a Sunday), Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve Day and New Year’s Day (Jan.3, 2022 for the courthouse since Jan. 1, 2022 falls on a Saturday). Christmas Day was not included as it falls on a Saturday this year.

Previously, Martin Luther King Day and President’s Day were considered holidays for the courthouse, but the board decided to offer two personal days for employees, allowing them to choose other days to take off instead.
