AVOCA – The AHSTW basketball teams swept a pair of Western Iowa Conference games over Tri-Center on Monday.

In the girls game, AHSTW (10-1, 7-1 WIC) and Tri-Center (2-8, 1-7 WIC) went back and forth for the first two minutes of the first quarter.

However, the Lady Vikes took control and stayed in command after the third minute of the first quarter and never looked back on the way to a 68-21 win.

“We though we had a decisive advantage inside the paint,” AHSTW girls coach Steve Sauvain said. “We wanted to get our posts, Kailey (Jones) and Kinsey (Scheffler) a lot of looks. Kinsey also did a really good job for us on the glass as well.”

Jones lead all scorers with 29 points, while senior Scheffler followed with 16 points.

The boys’ game featured a showdown of two one-loss heavyweights and the winner would claim the current number two spot in the WIC.

AHSTW (9-1, 7-1 WIC) used a 7-0 run to start the fourth quarter to claim that feat over Tri-Center (8-2, 6-2 WIC) 57-54.

“We super pleased about this win,” AHSTW boys coach G.G. Harris said. “I thought we did really well in continuing to battle. Tri-Center did an excellent job at keeping the game a their pace, so for us to find a way to get the win is huge. We had some guys, some seniors really step up tonight.”

The Trojan’s junior Leyton Nelson lead all scorers with 18 points. The Vikings were lead by senior Joey Cunningham with 13 points, senior Sam Porter followed close behind with 11 points.

AHSTW will play at Riverside tonight.
