AUSTIN, TEXAS — Rebecca Topham is on her way to the national finals in the 3000-meter steeplechase.
Topham, a Wichita State University junior and the former Griswold standout and multi-time state champion and Drake Relays champion in both high school and college, earned her way into today’s NCAA Division I women’s track championship finals by posting the 10th-best time in Thursday’s preliminaries.
Her time of 9:57.06 was sixth-best in her heat, where the initial field of 24 was narrowed to 12. The five best in each of two heats advanced to finals, plus the two next-best times, and Topham was one.
Topham posted her season best time at 9:53.92 at the East Preliminary Round May 23-25 at Jacksonville, Fla., to qualify for finals.
Allie Ostrander, a junior from Boise State University, has the preliminary standard of 9:44.32.
The finals are at 5:54 p.m. today at Mike A. Myers Stadium, Austin.
