Leah Edie and Mitch Mundorf own and operate “The Gym,” along with their family. They plan to hold an open house on Oct. 19 to allow the public to see the new business.

ATLANTIC – There is a piece of history laying on the floor at The Gym in Atlantic. It is a piece of turf from a football field.

“The turf is off the St. Louis Rams’ Practice Field when Kurt Warner played there,” said Leah Edie.

Edie, along with finance, Mitch Mundorf, and their family own and operate “The Gym,” which is 24 hour gym with that piece of history, along with exercise equipment, located at 1000 East Seventh Street in Atlantic.

Working out has always been a hobby of Mundorf’s, and he wanted to be able to offer that experience to others in the Atlantic area. So family members all pitched in, and worked to make the property into the business it is today. There was remodeling to be completed, painting to be done, carpeting to be put in, and equipment to find, along with aforementioned turf.

“This has been about a two and a half year project in the making,” Edie said.

The business officially opened on Sept. 9, and members can use the equipment anytime in a 24 period. They have have to be 18 years old or older, and they have to sign up for a membership.

People can stop in during staff hours, which are as follows: Monday 1 to 5 p.m., Tuesday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thursday 1 to 7 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to noon, or they can make an appointment by calling 712-250-5195. When they sign up, they will receive an email link to get an app for their phone, and then they are able to use the app to unlock the door to get inside. There are also lockers available and changing areas.

Once inside, people are able to use the equipment themselves, but there are also posters on the wall with bar codes that can be scanned with their phone that takes people to web sites or videos to explain how to use the equipment properly. Memberships are $36 per month or $430 for a year for singles, and $45 per month or $540 for a year for couples. People are also welcome to come during staff hours, and purchase an $8 day pass and try out the equipment as well. More information about the business can also be found on social media- either on Facebook-search for The Gym or on Instagram- search for thegym50022.

A grand opening is planned for Oct. 19 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and there will be door prizes, like t-shirts, water bottles, and gym bags, given away and the Beef Producers will be grilling there from noon to 1 p.m.

Mundorf said the response so far about the business has been “really positive,” and it has even inspired people to take better care of themselves.

“I think that’s one of the best feelings so far is that we’ve had members come in that it’s inspired them to start working out again,” he said.
