COUNCIL BLUFFS — Iowa Western will try for its first two-game winning streak today when they host Ellsworth Community College for its homecoming.
The Reivers broke a three-game losing streak to rout Dodge City 37-7 a week ago on the road. Quarterback Cam Thomas put up 353 yards passing and connected on three long pass plays — finding Zion Perry (43 yards), Marcus Rodgers (27) and Jayson Murray (55) — to take command.
Ellsworth, meanwhile, is coming off a last-second 39-35 loss to the College of DuPage a week ago in Iowa Falls. The Panthers had rallied from a 13-0 deficit to eventually lead in the fourth quarter, 35-33, with 17 seconds left.
In what capped off a wild final 1:32, where both teams scored two touchdowns each, the Chapparals used a 68-yard Hail Mary pass on the final play to send the Panthers to their fourth loss of the year against one win.
The Panthers — whose lone win is a 15-8 victory over Dodge City on Sept. 21 — are led by Marice Whitlock and his 239 yards rushing on 48 carries to lead an attack that has produced 637 yards, while quarterback AJ Payne has 165 yards rushing.
The passing defense for Ellsworth is a concern, as the Panthers have given up 1,125 yards through the air.
Iowa Western, meanwhile, has 1,002 yards through the air in its first five games, 772 off Thomas’ arm. ZaQuandre White, the Florida State transfer, has 502 yards rushing.
Game time is 2:30 p.m.
