GRISWOLD -- Thursday night’s quadrangular at Griswold gave wrestling fans sort of a preview of what to expect this weekend at the Riverside Invitational.

Three of the teams in the field in Saturday’s big meet at Oakland were in action on the mats in Griswold.

Of the 23 matches actually contested, 17 were decided by pin, three by decision, and one each by major decision, injury default and technical fall.

When the dust cleared, it was Riverside who came away with three convincing victories over Audubon (72-12), Griswold (63-18) and Southwest Valley of Corning (63-17). Even though forfeits helped make the final results even more one-sided than the duals actually were, there was still plenty to put a smile on coach Casey Conover’s face.

“We’re coming, we’re coming,” said Conover. “We’ve got a long ways to go. But I liked the intensity of how we wrestled and liked how we were focused. We’ve got a lot of work on technique we’ve got to do.”

Bulldog freshman Nolan Moore picked up the closest match of the evening, gutting out a 4-2 decision over Griswold’s John Seyler at 126. Lane Karros, at 285, also picked up a pinfall win, needing just 45 seconds to pin Brandon Bellmyer.

For its part, Griswold didn’t do too badly despite losing all three of its duals, including Southwest Valley (27-12) and Audubon (25-24). The match vs. the Wheelers this time was tied 24-24 after all matches were wrestled, but it was first points scored that decided that dual.

The Tigers were without the services of 160-pounder Derek Mueller due to a shoulder injury. Seth Butler went 2-1 on the evening, getting a pair of pinfall victories, to lead the charge, and there was a very close match where Zane Vance fell just short of upending Southwest Valley’s Brendan Knapp in a 7-4 contest.

“It’s kind of hard to win when you’re giving up 30 points a contest,” said coach Matt Leighton. “Otherwise we wrestled pretty tough the matches we did wrestle.”

In addition to the win over Griswold, Audubon picked up a 19-18 victory over Southwest Valley. For the evening Wheeler 220-pounder Dylan Obermeier, ranked eighth in the Predicament’s Iowa Class 1A poll, got three wins on the evening, two by pinfall and another a 13-1 win over Bryson Rhamy of Southwest Valley.

“He’s been wrestling very well,” said Bohlmann. “He stays late every night and works with the coaches and he’s just putting a lot of time in and wants to succeed.”

The coach also had praise for Luke Mosinski, who had a pair of wins, both by pinfall. “He came back after being sick all week and did well,” the coach said.

Riverside hosts its annual invitational on Saturday. Besides Audubon and Griswold, AHSTW and Exira/Elk Horn-Kimballton are part of the field.
