EXIRA - Just east of Elk Horn or west of Exira, at 1398 280th Street, is an Iowa winery that got it's unofficial start at Christmas in 2001 when Allan Petersen got a wine making kit for a present. Today the business is a full service wine production facility, with a retail outlet, vineyard, and party and catering facilities on site.

Danish Countryside Vines and Wines is owned by Loren and Jennifer Christensen and they offer 21 wines for sale. They have won numerous awards for their wines, including a double gold rating at the Iowa State Fair for their red wine, "Sweet Caroline."

Looking to learn more about wine? Tours and tastings are available. If you are planning a special event or a family gathering, the winery offers space in the loft for up to 90, and can even host weddings inside or outside.

Just looking for an interesting night out? The winery offers free concerts March through October and you can enjoy a bottle of wine and pizza from the local Flour Mill Restaurant. Loren, guitar player and singer, entertains with a variety of music, check with the winery to find out when the next concert is scheduled.

Some upcoming events include a Wines and Spines Book Club program also hosted by the winery and the library, discussing The Storied Life of AJ Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin and an Elk Horn Library Murder Mystery Dinner at the Winery on July 27. The murder mystery requires advance registration by July 22 by calling the library at 712-764-2013.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, and by appointment.
