EXIRA - It's good news for Exira and area residents: a Dollar General is being built with plans open in February.

The store will be located on the west end of the empty lot where the elementary school used to stand, north of East Washington Street and east of South Edgerton.

Ground was broken in early October and crews have poured cement and are starting with the frame for the building.

Mike Huegerich, Exira Mayor, said the new business "is awesome for Exira."

He said the business would bring some jobs to town, and would give residents a place to pick up a few groceries and other items from clothing to cleaning products and more.

He also had hopes that the addition of the store would bring in people from areas like Brayton or Elk Horn who might otherwise have to drive farther to pick up what they needed.

He said the deal was in the works for a few months. "We work with Clint Fichter out of Avoca," he said, "He's been helping us out with some city stuff, and between him and the owners of the property (they got it started)."

H2B is the owner of the property, Huegerich said, "and they got together with Dollar General and decided on a spot. They looked at a couple other spots in town, trying to get the land they wanted. They made a deal with H2B and it got started."

Huegerich said there had been other growth on main street in Exira, with the opening of "Hometown Decor" at 111 West Washington Street. A ribbon cutting was held on Oct. 12 for the retail and decor shop.

Huegerich said city officials were happy to see the business going in, and hoped it would also add tax revenue to the town. "It's going to be great."
