CASS COUNTY — Cass County Sheriffs deputies, Atlantic Police and emergencies responders had a busy Thursday evening starting about 7 p.m. on Thursday night with three incidents -including a fatal shooting — happening in a short period of time.
Chase Jones, 22, of Atlantic, was shot in an incident at 69244 Lyman Street, in Griswold on Thursday night. Emergency responders and law enforcement were called out on a report of a shooting and Jones was transported to Cass County Memorial Hospital via Griswold Rescue, where he was declared deceased, according to information from the Cass County Sheriff’s office.
An autopsy is scheduled for July 13 at the DCI lab in Ankeny. The incident remains under investigation by the Cass County Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Criminal Investigations.
Shortly after that incident was reported, officers with the Atlantic Police Department attempted a traffic stop on an individual on a motorcycle that reportedly ran a red light. Reports said a pursuit began when the individual on the motorcycle took off, but officers were unable to apprehend the individual. On Friday, Atlantic Police Chief Dave Erickson said he didn’t have any details. “All three things happened in about 10 minutes,” he said, “It was quiet up ‘til then.”
He said the incident was still under investigation, but said the department knew who the individual was and would be filing charges.
Not long after that, a fight broke out in the Cass County Jail between two inmates. Cass County Deputy Josh McLaren reported that the inmates were separated, and one of the inmates was transported to CCMH.
