Christmas cards were recently shared with residents of nursing homes across Cass County.

Residents of Caring Acres of Anita, Griswold Rehabilitation and Rehab, Heritage House, Allen Place, and Atlantic Specialty Care received cards made by Cass County community members.

Earlier this fall, as distancing protocols were implemented in care facilities to slow the pandemic, a group of people in Cass County became concerned residents of long-term care facilities would miss community connections this holiday season. They reached out to activities directors of area facilities and learned that cards and letters are often residents’ favorite gifts.

The team got to work, and soon enough, they’d rounded up cards and reached out to organizations and volunteers across the county to get cards made for the five facilities.

Lastly, in addition to sending cards, volunteers also decorated outdoor areas visible from residents’ window for a few facilities.

This work wouldn’t have been possible without many, many people coming together. Project volunteers included Atlantic Kiwanis Members such as Karla Akers, Carol Seddon, Jacque Meisinger, and Vicki Christensen, Atlantic Elks and Does including Vicki Nordskog and Darla Casady, students and teachers in elementary schools in CAM And Atlantic, including Atlantic Art Teacher Faith McCunn, Pymosa 4-H Club Members, Cass County Health System Auxiliary Volunteers, and community volunteers including Grace Martens, Sue Riggs, and more.

The card writing was so well-supported and successful, organizers are considering similar projects for 2021—such as New Year’s or Valentine’s Day cards.
