The Griswold Optimist Club Meeting was held Nov. 2 with 18 members and four guests present. Meeting was opened by President Joe Rush. Jim Smith gave the invocation. Joy Smith, Gary Weideman and Ray Wilson gave quotes.

Carolina Arcia, Ellen Olson and Lyndi Mueller were guests and presented the program for Vickie Anstey. The girls are part of the FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America – which replaced the FHA organization). Each year, FCCLA has STAR events competition in many categories that allow the students to develop speaking and presentation skills as well as spotlighting the great projects in which members participate. Through qualification at regional and state events, the girls took a Chapter Display Review entry to the national convention in Anaheim, Calif. at the end of June and first few days of July. There were over 9,000 students from all over the country attending the convention. They received a silver award and in addition to the convention activities were able to visit the beach and Disneyland. The day of the visit to the beach was the day that the earthquake hit California and they had to get out of the ocean because of the effect on currents. The Griswold chapter is involved in many community service projects and will have kids active again this year in STAR events showcasing them.

Soup, sandwiches and sweets were provided for teachers during conferences. Hotdogs, chips and hot chocolate were served at city park on Beggar’s night!

Jerry Putnam will have the program for the Dec. 7 meeting. Saturday evening, Dec. 7 will be our 35th Anniversary/Christmas Dinner and Auction. This annual event is our biggest fundraiser of the year. Last year was our first to open it open to the public. Mark your calendars, look for more information in the Griswold American and come enjoy a night of food, fellowship and supporting our kids and community.
