Abbi Brown, daughter of Ryan and Susan Sand Brown of Ankeny, the granddaughter of Nancy Sand and the late Leroy Sand of Kimballton, a sophomore at Ankeny Centennial High School, was one of 200 high school students from around the world selected to participate in the three-day Global Youth Institute.
The event was hosted by the World Food Prize Foundation and was founded by Norman Borlaug. Brown’s great-grandfather was the late Elmer Carlson of Audubon and was an acquaintance of, and a frequent communicator with Borlaug.
The annual Global Youth Institute kicked off in October and student delegates from Bahrain, Canada, China, Cuba, Honduras, India, Mexico, Netherlands, Sweden and the United States participated virtually to discuss food security and agricultural issues.
During the event, student leaders were given opportunities to connect with others, present and discuss their research papers with international experts and virtually tour cutting-edge industrial and research facilities.
The honor includes a scholarship to Iowa State University.
