COUNCIL BLUFFS — The home improvement company Menards may be considering purchasing the Mall of the Bluffs in Council Bluffs with the intention of demolishing it to make room for a new store on the site.
According to the Council Bluffs Daily NonPareil, the companies plan was discovered during a recent meeting of the Council Bluffs School Board Tuesday night where the board approved an agreement that specifies what steps the company will take to ensure the safety of students and staff at the nearby Madison Campus once demolition of the building begins.
According to the agreement, the company intends to acquire he 48 acres of land containing the Mall of the Bluffs and other “related structures” which will be the site of new Menards store and specifies that the company “will place appropriate fencing and/or barriers along the western and southern boundaries of the District Property, and such shall remain in place until construction of the Menards store is complete.” It goes on to state that Menards will work to provide as little disruption to the district’s property and “insure the New School on the District property shall remain operational at all times during the Project.”
The Madison Campus is located in the former Target retail store attached to the mall and was purchased for $1.9 million and included around $6.25 million in renovations. It is home to the Kirn Middle School this year with another Council Bluffs middle school scheduled to join next year.
