WALNUT — The second of two inmates who escaped the Sac Count Jail on Friday, Oct. 9 was apprehended in Walnut on Tuesday night. Shawn Freier, 25, of Lake View, was arrested at a residence in Walnut about 6:30 p.m. He was found in the upstairs area of a garage and was taken into custody without incident, and transported to the Pottawattamie County Jail. He was set to be transported to the Sac County Jail sometime Wednesday.
Both Freier and the other inmate who escaped, Joseph Sly, 35, of Rockwell City, are now being charged with escape from custody, assault while participating in a felony and assault on persons in certain occupations. Sly is being held in Buena Vista County jail.
The escape happened on Friday, Oct. 9, at 4:25 p.m. when two inmates overpowered a female correctional officer. Sly was being moved from a main cell area back to a holding cell after a shower. As the correctional officer was opening the main cell door, she was grabbed by Freier. Freier and Sly pulled the officer into the main cellblock, and shut the door, locking the officer inside. The two inmates then ran down a stairwell. A courthouse custodian, hearing the correctional officer screaming, opened a locked door at the bottom of the staircase, and Sly pushed the custodian out of the way, and ran down the hall, exiting the building. Freier, at the bottom of the stairway, entered a kitchen area through an unlocked door and jumped out a first floor window.
Freier fled south from the jail, Sly went north.
Law enforcement from surrounding areas responded to the incident, and used a drone with thermal imaging as well as a K-9 from the Sac County Sheriff’s office, but called off the search after dark. On Saturday, Oct. 10, an off-duty Lake View police reserve officer was travelling through Sac City and spotted Sly around 7:28 a.m., walking north on Fifth Street. The reserve officer was able to take Sly into custody without incident and Sly was returned to the Sac County Jail.
In addition to the charges related to the escape, Sly faces charges in Calhoun County for domestic violence and sex abuse. Freier was serving time for domestic violence charges.
