GRISWOLD – ACGC’s first week back on the volleyball court was very profitable.

Two days removed from their first match since coming out of a coronavirus-related quarantine, the Chargers won the championship at the Griswold Invitational Saturday at Griswold High School.

The Chargers got revenge against Denison-Schleswig, who beat them in a three-set match in pool play. In the finals, the Chargers dominated and won 25-16, 25-14.

The Chargers defeated Exira-EHK in its semifinal 25-14, 25-6, while the Lady Monarchs took down the host Tigers 21-18, 21-13.

“We are so happy to be back and playing volleyball,” said ACGC coach Trevor Irwin. “It’s such an awesome feeling and the girls are happy to be back playing volleyball. We’re having fun on the court and playing at a high level.”

The Chargers and Lady Monarchs, along with Riverside, each went 2-1 in pool play, but by sets won, the Lady Dawgs was demoted to consolation play, where they beat IKM-Manning 15-25, 25-17, 15-6. All three teams beat Southwest Valley.

“It came down to consistency on our side of the court,” said Irwin of the difference between the pool play loss and championship win over the Lady Monarchs. “We knew we had to serve aggressively and keep them out of system as much as we could because we knew they had strong arms going into offense. We had to keep the pressure down and keep it consistent.”

“We were super-happy with the girls in the championship round. We knew we could compete better against Denison-Schleswig and they’re really a solid team as well. We’re just glad our girls came to compete.”

Griswold finished unbeaten in pool play with wins over pool play runner-up Exira-EHK, IKM-Manning and Council Bluffs Heartland Christian.

The only statistics immediately available were from Riverside. Kenna Ford ended the day with 58 assists and five ace serves, plus two blocks in four matches. Izzy Blumi had 23 kills, whle Ari McGlade had 29 digs.
