ESSEX – Griswold clinched their first-ever Corner Conference championship in softball after a hard-fought 3-0 win over Stanton Friday night in Essex.
According to coach Jody Rossell, the game was scoreless through the first three innings until Anna Kelley launched a home run over center field in the top of the fourth to put the Tigers on the board.
Kelley got things going for the Tigers again as she led off the top of the fifth with a double and stole third. Kelley scored on a Makenna Askeland ground out to bring the score to 2-0.
The Tigers scored their final run in the top of the seventh when Lydia Greiman got on with a single. Pinch runner Grace Cook advanced to second on a single by Jenna Reynolds. Cook scored on a Viqueen error on Haylee Pennock’s grounder up the third-base line.
Brenna Rossell pitched the shut out for the Tigers allowing just three hits with six strikeouts and one walk. Kelley had three hits, while Greiman and Reynolds each hit singles.
Griswold improved to 6-5 on the year and, with a 2-1 regular season conference record, is one game back of Stanton in the Corner standings. The win over Stanton in the conference tourney was revenge for a 7-3 regular-season loss.
The Tigers return to the field today when they travel to Fremont-Mills.
