HARLAN — Albert Carlson, 75, of Kirkman, died in a two vehicle accident on Highway 59 on Friday (Sept. 6) evening. According to a report from the Shelby County Sheriff’s office, a call came in about 5:58 p.m. about a head-on crash in the 1100 block of Highway 59. Carlson was driving a 2003 Buick Park Avenue southbound on the highway, while a 2018 Chevy pick up pulling a camper was traveling northbound. Carlson’s Buick crossed the centerline, and hit the pick up and camper head on. The vehicles came to rest on the west side of the roadway.

Carlson was trapped in his vehicle, and had to be extricated by mechanical means; The Shelby County Medical Examiner pronounced Carlson dead at the scene. The driver and passenger in the other vehicle were not injured.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s office was assisted at the scene by the Iowa State Patrol, Harlan Police Department, Harlan Fire and Rescue, Shelby County Emergency Management, Iowa DOT, Medivac Ambulance and the Pauley-Jones Funeral Home. The Iowa State Patrol is investigating the crash.
