EXIRA — The Exira City Council is looking at putting together an Urban Renewal Plan, and discussed the steps in the process with Consultant Clint Fichter recently during special meeting and regular monthly meeting.

During the special meeting, the council heard an update on abandoned properties in the community, as well as tax increment financing (TIF).

Fichter said he talked about how Urban Renewal and tax increment financing are associated, with towns using the tools to grow and redevelop.

An Urban Renewal Plan could be the right tool to help with potential commercial development in the future, along with some housing programs that the city is looking at.

“They are looking at getting rid of some junk houses,” he said.

Fichter told the council that an authorization of necessity would be the next step, and that it could spell out the need for an Urban Renewal Plan, and help the city proceed with plans and hearings needed.

In other business, the city approved the final payment of $92,896.62 for contractor McCarthy Trenching; approved a resolution allowing the fire department to use $25,000 for a building beautification project and talked about plans to set a public hearing for Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m. on the adoption of the Codification of Ordinances for the city.
