EXIRA — It’s good news for Exira and area residents: new Dollar General was built in Exira, and had a soft open on Sunday, Feb. 9.

The store offers everything from food and snack items to personal items like headphones, seasonal items like Easter candy and home decor, and much more. According to the Dollar General website, the store is open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

Dollar General is located on the west end of the empty lot where the elementary school used to stand, north of East Washington Street and east of South Edgerton.

Ground was broken in early October and area residents got to see the building and parking lot grow quickly. Hiring was going on in January.

Mike Huegerich, Exira Mayor, said the new business “is awesome for Exira.”

He said the business would bring some jobs to town, and would give residents a place to pick up a few groceries and other items from clothing to cleaning products and more.

He also had hopes that the addition of the store would would be a draw for people from areas like Brayton or Elk Horn who might otherwise have to drive farther to pick up what they needed.

In November, he said the deal was in the works for a few months.

“We worked with Clint Fichter out of Avoca,” he said, “He’s been helping us out with some city stuff, and between him and the owners of the property (they got it started).”

H2B is the owner of the property, Huegerich said, “and they got together with Dollar General and decided on a spot. They looked at a couple other spots in town, trying to get the land they wanted. They made a deal with H2B and it got started.”

Huegerich said city officials were happy to see the business going in, and hoped it would also add tax revenue to the town. “It’s going to be great.”
