GUTHRIE COUNTY — An accident on Highway 44 in Guthrie County resulted in the death of a Coon Rapids woman and injured two others on Saturday, May 23.

A 2001 Ford Taurus, driven by Mary Virginia Mingus, 88, of Coon Rapids, was traveling southbound on Chestnut Road about 2:30 p.m. approaching the intersection of Highway 44 and Chestnut Road, and pulled out in front of a 2016 Ford F150 driven by Jonathon Roger Merk, 43, of Waukee, traveling westbound on Highway 44.

The Ford F150 collided with the Taurus, sending both vehicles in the south ditch.

Mingus, who was wearing her seatbelt, was transported to Guthrie County Hospital by Guthrie EMS, but died as a result of the accident.

Merk and a passenger, Hunter Merk, 12, also of Waukee, were both wearing their seatbelts but were injured in the accident, and were transported to Audubon County Memorial Hospital by Audubon EMS.

The Iowa State Patrol was assisted by Guthrie County Sheriff’s office, Guthrie Center Fire and Rescue and Audubon County Fire and Rescue.
