AUDUBON — Brian Rustvold, 49, of Audubon, was killed in a UTV accident in Poweshiek County on Saturday.

The accident happened in rural Montezuma, at about 7:50 p.m., according to the Iowa State Patrol.

Rustvold was operating a 2016 Polaris Ranger UTV, northbound on Centerpoint Drive, a private road at Lake Ponderosa, and failed to negotiate a curve in the road, causing the UTV to go into an uncontrolled slide. As the UTV left the west edge of the roadway, the tires caught traction, causing the UTV to roll onto the driver’s side.

Rustvold was partially ejected from the machine through an open doorway, and became trapped under the roll cage and roof.

He was transported from the scene by Montezuma Ambulance to Unity Point Hospital in Grinnell, but died enroute.

His passenger, Rene (Frampton) Rustvold, his wife, was not seriously injured.

The accident is still under investigation, but the State Patrol said a lack of seat belt use, speed, and alcohol consumption prior to the crash seemed to be contributing factors.

Funeral services for Brian Rustvold are set for Saturday, July 6 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon.
