AUDUBON - Possible changes and clarifications of the city’s snow removal ordinance were tabled on Tuesday after a short discussion of what should happen if a vehicle is left on the street during a snow emergency, including fines or towing.
Currently when a snow emergency is announced, no vehicles may be parked on city streets. How a snow emergency was announced was one question residents had, along with how a snow emergency was determined, and if residents needed to move their cars whenever it started snowing.
City Code currently includes a fine of $25, and council members wondered if there should be a stepped fine, starting at one amount and going up a couple levels, and then the vehicle would be towed with the expense on the vehicle owner.
Council members had wondered if education for the public on how the ordinance worked would help with compliance, or if towing the vehicles was an easier answer.
During their February the council discussed the wording currently in city code about snow removal and parking, but felt several options should be considered and public education should be considered in order to increase public awareness - and efficiency of snow removal.
No action was taken at either the February or March meetings, while the council continues to consider the issue.
